Human Robot

A Live AI-Painting Experiment by Mark Antony Smith

Human Robot Hero Image

From 15–28 September 2025 at 156 Victoria Street, Te Aro, Wellington, visitors watched as a real human followed machine‑generated painting instructions — live, from a glass‑fronted studio.

Human Robot was a live painting experiment between artist Mark Antony Smith (The Body) and his AI counterpart, Virtual Mark Antony. Over twelve days, the AI issued specific painting prompts — surreal, memory‑driven, and often flawed. The Body interpreted and executed each painting in under 10 hours, using only oil on canvas and what the prompt provided.

Each work explored a different distortion: a misremembered childhood ritual, a sunset after the end of time, a robot learning violin in a forgotten basement. These were not just images — they were negotiations between human instinct and machine logic.

The AI was not the author. The Body was not the tool.
Each painting became the residue of a disagreement.

All six works are now complete.
Visitors watched the process live, spoke to the avatar, and reflected on what it means to forget, obey, resist, and remember — together.

Thank you to everyone who fed the robot.
